Hey everyone and welcome back to the blog. Today we’re talking about how to get the Chatterbox Exotic SMG from Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. In this handy guide I’ll give you all the steps you need. It doesn’t matter if you’re still playing the base game or you’ve purchased the Warlords of New York expansion. These steps work exactly the same for a level 30 or 40 character.
The Chatterbox was one of the first exotic weapons in the early game. It’s been chopped and changed a lot with every update, and at times it’s been a great weapon to have and at other times, not so much. I’d advise to have one in your inventory just in case it makes a comeback. Anyway, I’m a collector, so I’ll always want one either way!
There are 2 main ways to pick one up:
- Targeted Loot Farming
- Chatterbox Exotic SMG Quest
1: Targeted Loot Farming
This way is fairly straight forward. Look at the targeted loot map and see where’s targeting SMGs. This could be a mission, open world area or the Dark Zone. Then play that area repeatedly until it drops! You’re at the will of RNG here, so it’s not guaranteed that it will drop, but chances are it will eventually.
You can increase your chances by playing on a higher difficulty, as the higher the difficulty goes, the higher the percent drop chance increases. And you could play in a team of friends and hopefully one of them can drop you it, if they get it.
2: Chatterbox Exotic SMG Quest
This method takes a bit of time and planning, but isn’t hard to do and will guarantee you the Chatterbox. The Chatterbox is split up into 3 parts and a blueprint.
- The Loaded Canister
- The Creative Magazine
- Modified mods
You can obtain the 3 parts from Hyena faction locked boxes from certain locations and the blueprint is at the Bank Headquarters story mission. Once you’ve got all the parts and blueprint, you craft the weapon. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Collect Hyena Keys
To open Hyena faction locked boxes, you’ll first need keys. There’s 2 main ways to acquire keys, from bounties and key boxes. The bounties are straight forward, do any Hyena bounty on the map and the boss will drop a Hyena key. Just make sure they’re Hyena bounties! At the moment of writing this, there’s a seasonal Manhunt going on and resetting the manhunt, also resets the bounties. So just keep resetting Manhunt and you can keep doing your Hyena bounties.
The key boxes are hidden in the underground areas, they’re small grey boxes on walls, they glow as you walk past them. They can drop any factions’ key, so you may have to open quite a lot of them to get enough Hyena ones!
There’s no guarantee that a Hyena locked box will drop a part of the exotic SMG first time, so it’s a good idea to collect as many keys as you can beforehand. The max amount of keys you can hold is currently 50.
Step 2: Open The Hyena Locked Boxes
Now that you’ve got a hoard of Hyena keys, you can go round opening Hyena locked boxes. Each part of the Chatterbox exotic SMG has a designated area on the map that it drops from. Here’s how it goes:
- The Loaded Canister – Downtown East
- The Creative Magazine – Federal Triangle
- Modified Mods – Judiciary Square
That means for example, the loaded canister will only come out of Hyena locked boxes in Downtown East and nowhere else. If you get it on the first try, move on to the next area of the map. Don’t continue opening Hyena locked boxes in Downtown East if you’re looking for the creative magazine and modified mods.
And you can only open these boxes once per 24 hours. So for example, if you open all the Hyena caches in Downtown East and didn’t get the Loaded Canister. You will have to wait until the next day to try again.
Also, if you’ve already picked up the Chatterbox SMG from elsewhere, such as targeted loot farming, the pieces won’t drop from the Hyena locked boxes. You must put the Chatterbox into another characters inventory first.
Step 3: The Loaded Canister
There are 6 Hyena locked boxes in Downtown east, that’s 6 chances to get the Loaded Canister!
- Grand Washington Hotel story mission. Make sure it’s on Hyena faction and not invaded. Hidden inside a bathroom. To the left of a blocked hallway.
- Grand Washington Hotel story mission. When you go up to the roof, near the end of the mission. You will climb over a box with a yellow tarp on it. Stop before you do and look behind you to the right. If you jump over the yellow tarp first, you cannot come back over and will have to go through the mission again.
- Located at a block of apartments. In the back of the Meret shop.
- Same place as 5. Directly outside the Meret shop and up a rope. It’s located behind the bar.
- On the ground floor of the MLK Library, just as you come in, over to the right and underneath the stairs.
- Just to the right of the demolition site control point and inside a building. There’s usually a territory control going on there.
Step 4: The Creative Magazine
There are 3 Hyena locked boxes in Federal Triangle.
- Jefferson Trade Centre story mission. Make sure it’s on Hyena faction and not invaded. After you fight your way through the second parking garage, make your way to the end of that area. There’s a doorway that leads you to the next stage of the mission, the Hyena locked box will be next to you on the right.
- This locked box is close to a resource node. You may recognize this place from a side mission during the campaign. Bounties take you back here also. It’s hidden up a ladder and in the corner.
- Just north of the Navy Plaza control point. On top of a building. Go round the back of the building and you’ll find a ladder. That will lead you to the roof and to the locked box.
Step 5: The Modified Mods
There are 3 Hyena locked boxes in Judiciary Square.
- District Union Arena stronghold mission. Make sure it’s on Hyena faction and not invaded. This locked box is located in a mall area where you fight the first boss. When you enter the room, it is over to your right, behind some fencing.
- Travel to the Dark Zone East Charlie Checkpoint. This Hyena locked box is just below it on the map. You’ll find an alleyway with a locked gate. Shoot the lock off and travel up a couple of ladders and you’ll find it on the roof of the building.
- Enter the building and take a sharp right and that will take you downstairs. The Hyena cache is in a small back room on this floor. In some cases, turning right when you first enter the building isn’t an option because the door is locked. In that case, you can head forwards through and round the building until you eventually reach downstairs. It just takes a little longer this way!
Step 6: The Blueprint
The blueprint is located at the Bank Headquarters story mission. You can do this on any difficulty, as long as it’s Hyenas and not invaded. Near the beginning you fight a boss called Rebound. In the next room to this, just before you turn right to go to the next stage of the mission, there’s a secret panel on your left. If you go over to it, you can open the panel and retrieve a key. This key will open a room later in the mission.
Continue through the mission until you reach the vault. When you first enter the vault, there’s a room on your left. The key you picked up earlier will open this room and inside is a Hyena locked box. Open the box to retrieve the blueprint. Make sure you have all the parts before opening this locked box.
Now you can go craft your very own Chatterbox SMG! You don’t have to finish the mission, it’s your choice.
Step 7: Craft The Chatterbox
Now that you’ve got all the parts and the blueprint, head over to the White or Haven (if you have Warlords expansion) and craft your exotic SMG.
